USGA announces United States Walker Cup Team
Group includes includes last 3 Porter Cup Champions

The United States Golf Association has announced ten players who will represent the United States at the Walker Cup.

Bud Cauley, Rickie Fowler, Brendan Gielow, Brian Harman, Morgan Hoffmann, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Smith, Cameron Tringale, Peter Uihlein and Drew Weaver will compete against Great Britain & Ireland Sept. 12-13 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Five of the ten players delayed their pro careers to play in this year’s Walker Cup. Tringale earned his degree from Georgia Tech this past May, Weaver graduated from Virginia Tech earlier this year, while Harman and Mitchell completed their college careers at the University of Georgia. Fowler, who played two seasons at Oklahoma State, is turning pro the week after the Walker Cup.

Two groups of college teammates are on the team – Georgia’s Brian Harman and Adam Mitchell, and Oklahoma State’s Rickie Fowler, Morgan Hoffmann and Peter Uihlein. Harman and Mitchell both finished their eligibility earlier this year, while Fowler is turning pro after the Walker Cup and will not return to Oklahoma State for his junior season. Hoffmann and Uihlein will be sophomores at Oklahoma State this season.

Harman and Fowler played against each other at this year’s NCAA Championship, when their teams met in the quarterfinals. In the final match between the two teams, Harman made birdie on the final three holes to win, 1 up, and give Georgia a 3-2 victory.

Three members of the team have won national match-play championships – Weaver (’07 British Amateur), Smith (’03 U.S. Mid-Amateur) and Harman (’03 U.S. Junior Amateur).

Mitchell was the 2008 Porter Cup Champion and a semifinalist at last year’s U.S. Amateur, while Hoffmann made the quarterfinals last year at the North & South Amateur, Western Amateur and U.S. Amateur.

Harman played on the Walker Cup team in 2005 and won the 2007 Porter Cup. He and Fowler (2007) are the only two players on the team with Walker Cup experience. Weaver, the second alternate for the 2007 team after winning the British Amateur, tied for 40th at this year’s U.S. Open.

Brendan Gielow won the 2009 Porter Cup and also captured the 2008 Northeast Amateur. Bud Cauley won the 2009 Players Amateur and was a semi-finalist at last week's Western Amateur.

Smith, 31, is the 2003 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion and won the 2009 Pennsylvania Amateur.
